(Sidenote: Navarre is an amazing beach! It's known as florida's best kept secret, so it's not as crowded as PCB or Destin. Only problem with beaches on the gulf: you have to watch out for jellyfish! I got stung my first day..Yay adventures!)
When we were unloading boxes, she would put some boxes to the side so she could go through and purge the things she no longer wants/needs.
Blake and I have recently started packing up all our stuff as well- we have a HUGE mountain of boxes in the living room just from wedding gifts. We started packing up our dishes, leaving only paper plates and plastic silverware and the such for us to use until we actually move. We then realized that we have an entire set of dishes we have never used, and about 80 bazillion mugs and glasses and cups of every type and size and shape.
(Sidenote number two: Anyone need a set of dishes? They're fairly plain but we have saucers, regular plates, bowls, and little coffee mugs to give away! Free for the taking! As in, PLEASE take them so we don't have to deal with them!)
Upon seeing how much stuff we have, we realized it was time to purge our belongings. But belongings are not the only aspect of life that are purgable. (Is that a word? I don't think it is.. So I'm going to make it one!)
Sometimes it's necessary to purge people from your life. You know, the frenemy from 8th grade who stole your boyfriend, the people on your facebook friends list that you don't actually know, and those who just bring you down. And just like purging material goods creates space for new, better things, cleaning house emotionally creates more space and time to hang out with real friends. And by friend, I mean 1. A person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard 2. a person who gives assistance; supporter (thanks, dictionary.com!)
I like to think that I have a nice amount of real friends. I mean, I have Blake, I have my mom, dad, sisters, brother, Blake's entire side of the family, the wonderful people I met at church here in the boro, (Hi Annie! I wonder if you're reading this!), and three girls from the 'Noog who came all the way out here to be my bridesmaids. (I can't thank you enough, Anna, Nicole, and Katherine!) And I can't imagine anyone I would rather have standing beside me on such a big day!
And the last purge? Simple. Emotional baggage and the past. Not that I really have emotional baggage, but we all have things from the past that hurt us or we regret. Just look at the 80s and 90s hairstyles!!
Before I met Blake, when I would get heartbroken by a guy (trust me, it happened. A LOT.) My mom or sisters or friends would always tell me "one day, you'll find a man who makes this all worth it and takes away the pain." Well mom, you were right. So why not go ahead and purge all those tough times, all those nights crying into a tub of Ben & Jerry's because I couldn't solve my precal homework? Like the beautiful Queen Elsa said, "Let it Go! Let it Gooooo!"
I think that's why people get so excited about New Year's. It's a fresh start, an excuse to purge the bad and replace it with the good. Like working out. Or drinking 8 glasses of water a day. Or keeping the bathroom clean. (Hey, three months is a good start!)
My beautiful best friends. I can't even remember a time before I loved these girls! |
